Being right is not the same as being the source.

An engine synthesizing an answer has to pick which version of a fact to trust when sources disagree, or when ten pages repeat the same claim with no indication which one originated it. Being correct doesn't win that contest by itself.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to inspect where a fact lives across the web, assign evidence-based readiness scores, identify when your own content is competing against its own mirrors, and explain why corroboration from independent sources outweighs restating a claim more forcefully in one place.

01 · Canonical signal

Is there one page marked as the authoritative version?

Set canonical tags and consistent self-reference across every place a fact appears — without one, an engine has no signal for which copy is the original and which is a mirror.

02 · Independent corroboration

Do other authoritative sources confirm the same fact?

Get the claim referenced by sources you don't control — a fact stated only on your own domain is a claim; the same fact echoed by an independent, credible source is closer to what an engine treats as verified.

03 · Mirror and syndication dilution

Is your own content competing against copies of itself?

Audit syndicated or scraped duplicates of your content across the web — press release wires, content farms, and outdated caches can outrank or override the canonical version if nothing distinguishes them.

04 · Citation-worthy structure

Is the fact written the way a citation would quote it?

Phrase key claims as clean, extractable statements — a fact buried in a run-on sentence full of marketing language is harder for a model to lift cleanly than the same fact stated plainly.

Score a fact's attribution strength.

A startup's funding round is announced on its own blog with no canonical tag. The same figures were also picked up by three press-release syndication sites that copied the post verbatim two years ago and have never been updated, including one now-defunct valuation figure the company later corrected only on its own site. No independent outlet has reported on the round directly.

  1. Score each dimension from 0: absent, 1: documented, or 2: tested.
  2. Name every claim that requires evidence before awarding a point.
  3. Identify the critical gaps that prevent reliable attribution.
  4. Write the smallest safe next experiment.

Answer rationale

Canonical signal is 0 — no canonical tag exists, so nothing tells an engine the company blog outranks its own two-year-old syndicated copies. Independent corroboration is 0: syndication sites that copied the post verbatim are not independent sources, they're duplicates, and no outlet has reported on the round on its own authority. Mirror dilution is a documented 0, not a pass — three stale copies actively compete with the corrected version, and one still carries a figure the company itself disowned. Citation-worthy structure can't be meaningfully scored above 1 while the correction only exists in one uncanonicalized location competing against three older, wrong ones. The appropriate next step is adding a canonical tag and updating or requesting correction on the syndicated copies — not writing a cleaner version of a fact that stale mirrors will keep outcompeting.
